When a loved one passes away, you want to do what you can to honour them and the life they lived. For many people, this means storing their loved one's ashes somewhere in their home. While keeping cremated remains (cremains) is relatively common, some people might want some ideas about how to properly store an urn within their home.

If you’ve been thinking about keeping a cremation urn in your home, here are a few tips to help you navigate this new territory:

Store the Urn Prominently

Some people will find it’s easier to keep cremains if they know that their loved one’s urn is displayed in a place of honour. You can give the urn a place of prominence on the mantle of your fireplace, set it on a console table near the front door, or anywhere else that feels right for you.

Some people keep the ashes incorporated into a small shrine or display that reminds them of their loved one. You might keep pictures and small mementos there, too.

Store Cremated Remains Outdoors

If seeing the urn in your home makes you too sad, you can always create a beautiful spot for it outside. This allows you to visit when you want to spend time with your passed family member or friend without it overwhelming you. Plant a few beautiful flowers and/or set up a plant pot or a few. You can also opt to have cremation stones made from the ashes to highlight your garden.

Create Keepsake Jewelry

While keeping cremated remains at home is a great option, many find that they want to carry their loved one's ashes closer to their heart. To this end, they might want to create some type of keepsake jewelry that utilizes their loved one's cremains. Various cremation jewelry designs store the ashes inside them. You can have keepsake jewelry made for many family members/friends. You can even have your loved one’s cremation ashes turned into a diamond!

Keeping Ashes in a Plant Pot

After the cremation process, you might decide to do something life-giving with the ashes. Mix some of the cremains into a plant pot where you’ll plant something beautiful. Whatever you choose, your loved one's cremains will nourish the plant, and you’ll have something alive and growing to enjoy with your memories.

No Right or Wrong Way

It’s important to note that there are no right or wrong ways to incorporate your loved one's urn into your daily life. Whether you need urns in Winnipeg or a Winnipeg cremating service, Alterna Cremation can help you honour your loved ones.
