Obituary of Barbara Vaughn Maksymic
It is with sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Vaughn Maksymic on July 10, 2024.
Barbara was born on December 16, 1950, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away on July 10, 2024, in the same city, surrounded by her loving family.
She was the beloved wife of Dave, devoted mother of Gord (Dawn), and cherished grandmother of Phoebe and Ripley. She is also survived by her sisters, Shelley and Terry (Chris), numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Barb was born at St. Boniface Hospital to Harold and Blanche Hunt. Her father worked for the CNR, and her mother was employed at Eaton's. Despite being born with epilepsy, Barb never allowed it to hinder her zest for life. As a young girl, she enjoyed ice skating with her sisters and partaking in various childhood activities, including being a Girl Scout. She treasured her summer holidays, often taking the train to Nova Scotia with her family to visit her maternal grandparents and relatives.
In the late 1960s, Barb met her first husband, Gordon, and together they welcomed their son, Gordon Jr., who was the light of her life. Gord and his cousin Tracy spent countless hours playing games and cards. Tracy fondly remembers visiting Auntie Barb's house, knowing that there would always be chocolate milk in the fridge, and the three of them would savor a glass together. Barb dedicated 40 years of her life to the Canada Revenue Agency in Winnipeg, forming enduring friendships along the way. She was known for her homemade treats, especially her delectable peanut butter squares.
In 1988, Barb met her second husband, Dave, and their love story culminated in marriage in 1992. They shared a deep bond and cherished each other from the moment they met. Barb found joy in accompanying Dave on his trucking journeys across the U.S. and Canada during her summer holidays, marveling at the transformation of the prairies into the majestic Rocky Mountains.
Barb's heart swelled with love when her son Gord found his soulmate, Dawn, and they blessed her with two beautiful grandchildren, Phoebe and Ripley, who became her entire world. She cherished every moment spent with them and treasured the love and joy they brought into her life.
Barb's battle with cancer was brief, but her strength and resilience were unwavering. The nursing staff and healthcare aides at the Concordia Hospital, particularly on the 3rd floor west and in palliative care, provided her with compassionate care during her final days. Their kindness and support were a source of comfort to Barb and her family.
Barb's memory will forever be cherished by all who knew her. Her legacy of love and compassion will live on in the hearts of those she touched. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of Barb's life and legacy will be held in the coming weeks, and all who were touched by her are welcome to join in honoring her memory.
Rest in peace, dear Barb, knowing that your love and light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those you leave behind.
