I was shocked to find out about Clancy Smith's death, on July 3 2024. It is now October 1. I have known Clancy for probably 40 years. When he ran for a seat i a federal election I would push his wheelchair. He and I shared very similat ideas about the world and politics but conversations with Clancy were always interesting and thought provoking. If there is a celebration of life still to come I would appreciate hearing about it.

I knew Clancy since I was in grade 1 or 2 and I first met him when there was a football game in his back yard on Oxford street. I kept tripping over the lawn sprinklers.
I remember Clancy through the periods when we were in all of Robert H Smith, River Heights, and Kelvin together, and beyond those times to the present year.
He was one year ahead of me and had noteables in his classes, like Neil Young in high school, who actually wrote a song about Clancy.
As a Libertarian, Clancy happened to run in one election against James Richardson (Liberal) Sterling Lyon (Conservative) and Jill Oliver (NDP) (who I didn’t know at the time, and who later became my law partner). The Junior Jaycees held a speakers meeting at Grant Park High School and introduced Clancy as the candidate for the ‘Libertine’ party. Clancy graciously asked the audience not to confuse his morals with his politics.
He once complained that I had not voted for him in one election; that he really believed he had x number of votes and none of them was mine. But I had voted for him. I just had no way of proving it.
Clancy frequently quoted from joke books. One such joke Clancy read to me was about the blacksmith who fixed someone’s car which was towed in from the country. The fix was a hammer blow to the radiator. The bill presented was for 21 Zlotties. When an itemization was demanded the blacksmith wrote: to hitting engine…1 Zlotty. To knowing where…20 Zlotties.
Clancy was a sounding board for me and was a good friend. He was there for me in good times and bad and I miss him.
