Obituary of Sylvia Warrington

In the early hours of Thursday, September 5, 2024 with a heart full of love our Mom and Grandma (Gram) found her PEACE and her new journey began.

Mom documented her accomplishments, her travels and her journeys throughout her life and was so proud of all she had done and seen in her 91 years! Her list is endless and we would like to share a few.

Whether it was by land, air or sea throughout her life she travelled to many spectacular places in the world; Egypt, Switzerland, France, Hawaii, Alaska, Italy, Hungary, Mexico, Barbados and those are only to name a few. She swam in the Atlantic, the Aegean and Caribbean seas, Gulf of Mexico and put her feet in the Pacific, the Straits of Northumbria, streams and lakes across the country.

Mom travelled across Canada and saw parts of the United States. She loved the outdoors, the water and the rocks, the mountains and the eastern coast. She delighted in the beauty that surrounded her and every chance she got on those magnificent shores of the seas, the oceans and the lakes, with her hands behind her back and her head lowered, she searched for rocks and shells.

Our mom loved an adventure and fun times and enjoyed many of them from going 1 mile underground at the historic San Antonio Gold Mine in Bissett where she got to run a jackleg, to a hot air balloon ride in South Dakota, rode on a Harley Davidson, drove a pontoon boat, paddled a canoe, drove a skidoo and a quad, skipped rope on her 76th birthday, brought the house down at Naked Magic on her 83rd birthday, fished, cross country skied, bowled, golfed, played bridge, Scrabble, cribbage, whist and loved her ‘Words with Friends’ that she played almost every day at 3:00pm with her sister in Halifax.

Mom played the piano and we will cherish last Christmas when she played Carols to the absolute delight of us all! She took pipe organ lessons, sang in the Church choir, took figure skating lessons, played baseball and tennis. Went to her first Jets game at age 85 and was named number 1 fan of the game! She liked the arts and attended many plays, musicals and symphonies.

Mom found much joy in playing handbells, volunteering at the Victoria Hospital, knitting uncountable (although she would know exactly) hats and scarves for those in need and raising monies for the annual Walk with Us fundraising campaign for the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society. Mom was a Home Economics teacher and later ran a florist shop until she officially retired.

Mom participated in a sweat lodge after the passing of her only grandson Steven and looked to the skies for Eagles to bring her comfort in knowing he is still with us.

The lights of her life, her “darlins” were her grandchildren, Laura, Janel and Ciara and she was overwhelmingly honored to see her youngest granddaughter being born. She was so very proud of them all and loved them as only a grandma can!

Our mom was deeply loved and will forever be remembered by her daughters Diane, Donna, Gail (Mark), Wendy (Dennis) and her grandchildren Laura (Seth), Janel, Ciara (Kodi) and all of her grandfurries, her sister Janice and her family, her brother Ralph (Maizelle) and their family, sister in-law Claudia (Phil) and their family and her many relatives and friends.

We are ever so thankful and grateful for the outpouring of love and support our mom received from her treasured family and friends not only during her final days but throughout her life. We know you all played a part in filling her heart with love, joy and happiness!

Our family would like to thank Cole, Minister of the Selkirk United Church who provided in home spiritual support and for his visit to the hospital where he provided our mom with prayer and comfort.

The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the health care providers from the Ambulance Paramedics, Selkirk Emergency Department and the nurses and aides from the Grace Hospital (2nd Floor) who went above and beyond to give our mom the utmost kindness, care, compassion and comfort in her final days.

As per our mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. The family will gather together to honor her at a later date.

A special act of kindness in memory of our mom would warm our hearts and if you so choose to make a donation in her honor, she was passionate about supporting the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society and Special Olympics or a charity of your choice.
