Obituary of Vera Delfing
Peacefully in her sleep, our Mother, Oma, Baba passed away at the Luther Home.
Vera was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia to Sophie and Andrew Wetzl. By the end of the war they were residing in Herford, Germany. In 1948 they immigrated to Winnipeg joining their relatives. Mom became a hairdresser and also worked at Christie Biscuits, helping her parents with their dream of becoming homeowners. In 1955 she married the love of her life, Hugo. They had three daughters Ursula, Ingrid (Terry Desmond) and Benita (Bohdan Matwijiw); followed by five grandchildren Kyle, Marissa, Tamara, Kellen, Garrett. In the years after Hugo’s death in 2005, Mom welcomed her great grandchildren, Dayton, Rylan, Khloe and Noah. All her children were her pride and joy.
Our mother was a wonderful cook and baker and loved nothing more than entertaining and feeding a crowd. She taught us well. She loved to knit and made sure that we all had afghans to remember her by. She and Hugo were very involved with the German Society and over the years she was president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Germania Soccer Club as well as the first female president of the Treue Husar Karneval Club. She and Hugo loved to travel and took many vacations with the highlight being their trip to Tahiti.
The last few years were difficult as vascular dementia took hold. We are so grateful for the care given her by the staff at the home over the last 10 months. We would especially like to thank the nurses North station with special thanks to Monika.
As per Mom’s wishes there will be no service. There will be a private family interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Vera's memory may be made to Luther Home or a charity of your choice.
We are glad that Mom is at peace and reunited with our Dad, who she missed dearly.
