Obituary of Kenneth Bryan Duguid
Ken passed away peacefully, on Monday, December 16, 2024 at the age of 84 years. Ken was predeceased by his father Robert and his mother Mabel, and is survived by his wife, Adele (nee Markus), with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage, and their sons: Rob (Paula) of Regina and their children [Joel (Kelly), Matthew (Lisa), and Evan], Bryan of Calgary and his children (Ace and Kaeleigh), and Paul of London Ontario and his children (Joshua, Sabrynn, and Cassara); great-grandchildren Maddox, Braxton, Kaspar, Eleanor, and Rosie; and sister Elaine (David) Klym of Winnipeg and brother-in-law Ted (Jeannette) Markus of Saskatoon and their families.
Ken passed away surrounded with love by Adele, his sons, and Paula, and the thoughts and prayers of all of his family and so many friends.
Ken was born in Winnipeg Manitoba on June 2, 1940, and went to school in Winnipeg. Ken was a marketer and entrepreneur extraordinaire in diverse industries, including with Western Grocers, Kraft Foods, Colortron Photos, and LifeTouch Photography, and in his businesses Nu-Line Building Products, and Kroma Kolor Photo Lab. At the national convention in Montreal in 2004, the Professional Photographers of Canada bestowed upon Ken, as the first-ever non-photographer, the honour of a National Citation in recognition for his services generously given to the Association and the profession.
Ken and Adele met in Grade 7 and then, while Adele was in training for nursing, he asked her to join him at a house party on Christmas Eve. Adele got the best kiss from Ken. The rest was history.
Ken gave back to his community in so many ways. He started a Cub pack. He was the President of the 35 Lions Club. He was a member of the Assiniboia Lodge No. 49 for 54 years. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. Since the early 1980s, he was a Shriner in the Drum Corp Unit in the Wa-Wa Temple in Regina, Saskatchewan, he was the Chair of the Shrine Circus Committee, he was appointed by each of the incoming potentates to serve on the Divan/governing body of the Khartum Temple for several years, and he was the President of the Khartum Ruff Riders Shrine unit that drove ATV units in the parades.
Ken and Adele loved to travel, including throughout Canada and the US, and in Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Scotland, and England.
Ken had strong values that he instilled in his sons including the importance of family, hard work, integrity, and fairness. He loved being out on a boat or water-skiing, nature, horses, and fishing trips, and he was a self-taught handyman. In his youth, he was a member of a singing group called "The Gems." With his Scottish heritage, he enjoyed a wee dram along with a cigar. More than anything, Ken absolutely loved all of his family, spending time at family gatherings and holding the new babies.
The family is grateful for the support received from family and friends and the givers of care to Ken during his stays at so many hospitals, with special thanks to Dr. David Breckman for his thorough care for Ken for approximately 25 years, Dr. Rami Kotb of Cancer Care, and the 7th floor caregivers at Beacon Hill Lodge (in particular Mary Lou, Evelyn, and Carlos) who looked after Ken with such warmth and understanding most recently.
Given that Ken was a devoted Shriner, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada in Memory of Noble Ken Duguid, by credit card (514.282.8545) or e-transfer (moncontribution@shrinenet.org).
There will be a Celebration of Life for Ken on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Breezy Bend Golf & Country Club, 7620 Roblin Blvd., Headingley, MB.
