Obituary of Katharina Smith

It is with great sadness that we inform all of Kay’s family and friends that she has passed on to a new address in heaven as her earthy body couldn’t carry her soul no more! Kay passed away in the early morning of May 28, 2019 at the age of 91 and went to her heavenly father at that time. Kay was born on June 28, 1927 in Brsljanica, Yugoslavia (Croatia) to the late Heinrich & Anna Lotz.

She leaves to mourn: her two loving children Herbert Batz (Shary) and Silvia Suderman (Ike), loving Stepchildren Irene Mikolash (Gary) & Eric Smith, grandchildren Quinn Batz, Zunny Suderman and 14 step grandchildren,19 Great step-grandchildren, 4 Great Great step-grandchildren, her brothers Henry Lotz (Herma), Jack Lotz, sister Elizabeth Greb (Gordon) and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and close friends.

Kay was predeceased by her parents Heinrich (1977) & Anna (1985) Lotz, husband Ernie Smith (2004) of 15 years, brothers Paul Lotz (Teresa), John Lotz (Ruby), sister Anna Fritz (Adam), sister in law Nancy Lotz, stepdaughters Lorraine & Doreen, and stepdaughter in-law Yvonne.

Kay had a full life! She was a dedicated, hardworking woman that gave freely of her time to family, many friends and to her church. She was better at giving then receiving! Fiercely independent! Forgiving! Resilient! Strong! A loyal friend. She loved to garden and loved to share the harvest. She enjoyed volunteering, delivering meals for Meals on Wheels up until the ripe age of 85! She loved to learn and never shied from trying to learn new things, she was impressive, someone to look up to for her strength! She never stopped being a shining example of a woman that God would be proud to call his own.

We will miss our sweet Mama, grandma, granny, sister, aunty, Patin (Godmother), friend, and everything about her including her cheerful smile, phone calls, text messages, video chats and the many times she travelled to B.C. and Alberta to visit her children.

A BIG thanks to all family and friends that brought treats (to her were:pickles, sauerkraut, soup) and took the time to visit Kay or send cards during her stay at Jocelyn House, she truly loved and appreciated ALL! A special thanks to Irene & Gary for their consistent visits and errands for Mom.

Kay’s Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday June 12th @ 2:00pm at Grace Christian Church, 50 Barnes Street, Winnipeg. Please come join us at her Celebration of Life service, stay for coffee and snacks after as we reminisce of stories from her past.

In lieu of flowers please consider donations to Jocelyn House of Winnipeg (www.jocelynhouse.ca). JH was a caring hospice for Kay and she was super lucky to be there as the nurses and staff were amazing and cared for her well in her last 6 months.
