Our deepest condolences to Gloria, Jeff, Scott and their families for the loss of your loved one.
It is very difficult to find words to express the loss of a true friend.
Our friendship developed when we were newly wed couples in Portage la Prairie. Over the years we shared laughter, tears, and a lifetime of memories.
Lil & Lou. To " Uncle Jack" Kim, Karen & Kevin.

Uncle John was an amazing person who led a remarkable life. We have so many wonderful memories of his visits to the farm southwest of Morden to assist with seeding and harvest, Corn and Apple Celebrations, and family get togethers. Uncle John touched so many lives for the good, and he will be truly missed by all of us.
With love, warm thoughts and prayers,
Kelvin, Patti, Andrew, Tommy, and Lucas

Christmas Eve, 1958. Selkirk Detachment. The late Ross Stewart had invited us to Selkirk to attend a party at the Selkirk Hospital. In those days, ‘Force’ members in training were not permitted east of the Manitoba/Ontario or west of the Alberta/BC borders at Christmas or Easter. So, off we went to Selkirk to see “Stewy” at Selkirk Detachment.
As I was readying to leave for the party, I was intercepted by Constable “Jack” Zacharias. He said, “C’mon Bob, you’re coming with me. We have to go to the undertaker’s to identify the bodies of 3 young men who have been killed in a head-on collision”. I said, “But Jack, I only started training in October!” And Jack said, “That doesn’t matter - you’re a Mountie now”.
In fact, I was a 3rd Class Constable fresh out of Lisgar Collegiate, Ottawa, homesick, who had never touched a dead body before. Jack was very calm and cool as we examined the bodies and I could see him looking at me from the corner of his eye to see if I was able to carry on as though I was normal. I managed well — while the others enjoyed the party.
What “Jack” did for me that Christmas Eve in instilling confidence, carried on throughout my service. I have never forgotten Jack Zacharias and I say a word of thanks for his life at his passing.

I never meet Jack, but feel like I lost friend reading his obituary. We shared a name, I am also Jack Zacharias from North Kildonan. I had many friends in the RCMP, we went to many of the same doctors, and sometimes got our medical records mixed up, we took phone calls meant for him as I am sure he did for us. I always though that st some point we would meet, I guess our next chance to do so will be in heaven.
Please accept my condolences for your loss

I only knew Jack and Gloria for a short while. I replaced him in Bern as the Liaison Officer. Although, no one in reality can replace Jack. I remember my very good friend Denis Comeau who was a young commercial officer at the time saying to me with a grin, when I grow up I want to be like Jack Zacharias. Well, Denis succeeded, he became ambassador to Thailand and ambassador to South Korea. Exactly what Jack was, a great ambassador for Canada.
On the lighter side, Jack had started this solemn practice in the summer of having a weekly get together in a nearby park. Coffee with two of our most helpful contacts from the Swiss Dept of Justice.
Although it was informal, with the Swiss it seemed to be a very solemn moment. It was my first meeting with them and they all ordered the same small cup of coffee. I am one of the rare persons that dislikes coffee. As they were ordering, I looked at the menu card and ordered something different.
Since John and guests were having a conversation, they did not hear me speaking to the waiter. I remember Jack at one point saying, they must be busy, it is taking longer than usual.
When the waiter arrived with his tray, on it were 3 small cups of coffee, and one large elongated glass containing the most beautiful multicoloured ice cream Sunday I had ever seen. On the table, my wonderful work of art towered over their minuscule cups.
However, I had broken protocol, I had in one sweep destroyed the majesty of the moment, the tasting, the scent, the aroma of morning coffee in the park. I very well know that there is not one bit of meanness in Jacks body, but looking into his eyes for a split second, I felt at that moment, perhaps I needed a bodyguard. I still laugh when I tell this story to friends.
I cherished those moments with Jack and will never forget him. Our thoughts are with you Gloria and the entire family.

My sincerest condolences to Gloria and the family. I am so sorry for your loss. Jack was one of my favorite people and he will be greatly missed.
I have known Jack for 23 years and over those years, enjoyed our conversations and hearing about what was happening in his life and with his family. Jack loved his family. Our conversations often would lead back to his time living in Europe and what an adventure that was. The last time I saw Jack was with Gloria about two years ago, we had lunch in Winnipeg. I couldn't help but notice how neither seemed to age and that even after all this time, they both looked very glamorous and could quite easily be featured in a Ralph Lauren ad. I will miss Jack's yearly invites to come to the Corn and Apple Festival. RIP Jack. You are in a better place now.

Our condolences to Gloria and the family! We are so sorry for your loss! We have fond memories of when you and John came to Steinbach on one of John's many trips to service the car at one of the local dealerships. We enjoyed having coffee or lunch whenever this happened. John would usually call us when he arrived in town asking whether we had time to meet him. We had many good discussions and enjoyed talking about our family memories and connections of the past. I appreciated the photo John sent from an old album of where we were all kids on the back of a half ton truck going to look at flood waters in the spring. We continued to connect by phone after our move to Winnipeg.

We will remember Uncle John for many things, but I think that the biggest gift that I personally received from him was his being the first in our family to offer me a perspective of the world from outside of our Canadian borders. In my younger years, not only did I enjoy hearing of his experiences in Europe and "elsewhere" (a certain “undercover” plane ride comes to mind), but I was inspired to think that it was actually possible for Manitoba boys to get out there and do good work in the world. Later on, I valued my conversations with him and the astute, informed insights he brought when talking geopolitics and the latest news – he was truly a smart cookie. If a coffee shop exists in the afterlife, I’m sure that he, Uncle Abe and my Dad are presently settling down to a good talk. Please accept condolences and hugs of support from our Eliza and I.

Hi Gloria,
I am so sorry for the loss of your wonderful husband and one of my great cousins. I had a note on my desk to call you when Erna called me to say she had just talked to you and were transferring Jack to Riverview the next day. I knew you were going to be very busy and occupied so I thought I could call a few days later. Too late.
I was going to ask you to tell Jack that I appreciated so much, the times Jack called me in the last few years to meet for lunch or coffee. Those were very special times. He was always interested in how I was and what I was doing. Also, he loved to discuss family histories and happenings. He was a 'people guy'.
I will pray that your life will be peaceful and you can live with beautiful memories of the time you had together. I know it will be very different for you. May God bless you!

Our heartfelt sympathy to Gloria and family. We’ll remember Jack as a wonderfully kind, helpful and interesting friend, who possessed a phenomenal memory. He epitomized service; in his work, for the good of his community, or cooking corn at the Morden Corn & Apple festival. We’ll miss the conversations, laughter and company of this complex, clever friend and true gentleman. Carol & Florian Soble
