Obituary of Bojan Breznik

On July 21, 2023, peacefully with his family by his side Bojan Breznik passed away at the age of 69, at the Selkirk General Hospital. He was predeceased by his mother, Rozalia Breznik.

Bojan (Bo) will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Gloria Breznik; daughters Shannon (Tom) and Kirsten (Mike); and grandchildren Kaila, Kaden (Paige), and Mackenzie Jean.

Bojan was born in Maribor, Slovenia July 27, 1953. He immigrated to Canada in 1978. He was employed at Motor Coach Industries (MCI) October of 1980. Bojan had become the fifth in seniority in the paint shop after putting in over 43 years at MCI and was still employed at the time of his passing. Bojan had many laughs at his workplace, and part of the work lotto group, as he had high hopes of being the next millionaire.  A special thank you to the work friends that visited Bojan at his home, as well as the visit at the hospital where Bojan had some of his last belly laughs talking about work stories.

Bojan met Gloria at the German Club in Winnipeg through their love of dancing. They would go almost every Friday night. Bojan and Gloria married December 26, 1983 and became a dad to Gloria’s two daughters. Bojan stepped in the role of dad quite easily and willingly. He took the girls to many sporting events, cheered them on with their sports, plus driving them all over for games and practices. He supported them into their adult hood and was a proud dad. He provided much love and financial support to his family. When it came to his grandchildren, he was even more proud. He was the number one babysitter for the oldest grandchildren. He made sure he was at as many events as he could whether it was school plays, or sports. His grandchildren could rely on him for anything.

Bojan himself played a high level of soccer in his old country and was often walking around in his younger days bouncing a ball on his knees and head walking around the house. He also had a black belt in Tae Kwan Do and was always spin kicking and showing his flexibility.

Bojan’s absolute favorite hobby was fishing. He thought he was the fish whisperer. He took this hobby very seriously and at no time was anyone allowed to speak. This is why he probably was alone for most of his fishing career.  Bojan travelled around Manitoba for his favorite fishing holes for walleye, sager, and trout. If he didn’t come home after work, Gloria would know to pack a sandwich and fill a thermos and go down to the water front in Selkirk where Bojan would be fishing the Red River. Bojan iced fished, and often liked to go out and scoop his own minnows. Many times, you would find Bojan’s catch of the day swimming in the bathroom tub.

Bojan had a strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and religiously prayed on Sundays for his family and friends. He donated to many religious groups and charities.

Bojan took pride in his painting whether it was a bus part, vehicle, or a home. He was his worst critic. He painted many vehicles for his family and always did a fantastic job. Bojan loved to cook delicious foods from his home country. He will be lovingly remembered for “Bo’s potatoes!” at Christmas dinner.

Bojan loved the wildlife in his yard, and always made sure the hummingbirds were fed. Cats loved Bojan whether he wanted them to or not. He would take in strays. In the last year Bojan got close to his neighbors Rob and Cecilia. He was happy to be socializing again after many rounds of Chemotherapy. Bojan would go with Rob for walks and Rob would take Bojan out on errands. Rob and Cecilia have been a huge support for Bojan and watching his home and beloved cat. The family cannot thank you enough.

The family would like to also thank the Cancer Care unit at the Selkirk General Hospital. The staff and Dr. Alexander were amazing with their patience, and how much care and support Bojan received. The staff genuinely cared for him it was easy to see. The Medical unit at the Selkirk General Hospital took care of Bojan in his last eight weeks of life. They went beyond their call of duty to keep Bojan comfortable, relaxed and he felt cared for. Bojan kept the Medical Unit on their toes when he would want to go out walking and being so independent. The doctors, nurses, and nurse aides were truly amazing and had so much passion when they took care of Bojan right up until his passing. Your sympathy and true genuine care of Bojan did not go unnoticed with him or his family. We can’t even name all the staff because there were so many who worked with Bojan and developed a special bond with him. Thank you to Tammie and Jayden for your extra check ins with Bojan. The family just can’t thank you all enough for how you treated Bojan.

Finally, the family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Demsas for his over and beyond care of Bojan for over 20 years. They formed a special relationship and loved to chat over sports. He took care of Bojan in the Cancer Care unit, as well as his GP.  Dr. Demsas made a point to always check on Bojan in the hospital. He is indeed one of the most compassionate doctors around.

At Bojan’s request cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held September 9, 2023 at 10:30 am at the Dunara Full Gospel Church 8904 Hwy 8 Petersfield with interment to follow, plus refreshments and snacks.
