Obituary of Constance Sybil Buchanan

In loving Memory of

Constance Sybil Hickaway Buchanan (Andrews) 

December 25, 1926 - November 25, 2023.

Everyone loved Connie.

She was sweet and funny, a wise old soul with a huge heart and great sense of humour. She always had time for her family and friends.

A great listener, and quick with a smile and a kind word for all who met her. Always a lady. Just ask anyone in Winnipeg, where she lived for most of her adult life.

Connie believed in living life to the fullest, and it would seem to many that FUN was her middle name. With a glint in her eye and a mischievous grin, she loved to prank and joke. Her favourite singer and celebrity was Tony Bennett, especially the song "I left My Heart in San Francisco"

Connie was always on the go and enjoyed may activities including 5 pin bowling, ballroom dancing, lawn bowling (St. Vital and Tuxedo). 

She was a devoted mother and homemaker, wonderful chef and master gardener. She bred and raised miniature schnauzers and was recognized publicly for her love and care of the animals in the Winnipeg Free Press. She loved family dinners and parties the most, and everyone was welcome. The more the merrier.

Mom was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Margaret and Morton Andrews. She relocated with her mother and sisters Coral and Carolyn to Mill Creek, Manitoba as a young girl where she enjoyed farm life and had many happy memories. She then relocated to Winnipeg, where she worked at Great West Life, and one evening met Harry Hickaway at a party. They married and went on to raise 5 children. They made Neil Avenue their home, and our home was always full of family and friends.

They enjoyed traveling, especially to Mexico and Spain.

They were a very active and sociable couple and were married for 51 years, until Dad died suddenly on June 9, 1999.

Later in life, Mom met and married Bob Buchanan and were together until his death.

Connie is survived by her 5 children; Louise, Penny, Fay, Jeffrey, Laird and their families plus sister Carolyn, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, niece Cynthia and cousin Todd. 

We would like to thank the staff and homecare at Donwood Manor for their kindness in Mom's last years. She appreciated each and every one who looked after her and knew them all by name.

We would also like to thank the staff, doctors and nurses at the Concordia Hospital for providing kind and compassionate care for Connie despite the challenging circumstances surrounding health care today.

Connie was a bright light and will be missed by everyone.
