Karen McCall

Obituary of Karen Alice McCall

With great sadness, Karen “Carebear” passed away suddenly on January 2, 2024.  Beloved mother of Michael and Robbie.

Left to cherish her memories are sister Janice (B.) of Virginia; Brown brother-in-laws Gary (Margaret), Keith (Brenda), and Lance Hanson; sister-in-law Trish; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends and family will miss her effervescent personality and karaoke.

Karen was preceded in death by her loving husband Richard Brown, her parents Margaret and Neale McCall, brother-in-law Ward Brown, sister-in-law Catharine Hanson, and cousins Rosemary Lynn Hopkins and David Sagar.

Karen was born in Dauphin on March 31, 1964 and moved to Winnipeg as a child. She sang in “The Gentlefolk” at St. Stephens Anglican and with numerous groups. She graduated from Red River College and University of Winnipeg as an Early Childhood professional, and from the University of Manitoba in Day Care Management. She worked in Winnipeg, Churchill and Thompson and later taught childcare workers at Keewatin Community College. She met the love of her life, Rick Brown, at The Complex in Churchill.

Carebear was loved by many children, and childcare teammates and made a difference in so many lives. She had a great love of music and loved sharing songs at karaoke nights (if there isn’t karaoke in heaven, she will start one).

She had an infectious laugh, a glorious smile and was famous for her shenanigans in both Canada and the United States!  She was caring and compassionate and had genuine love for others which she showed in her daily life. She was always the first to help. Karen had many friends and every single one of them was special to her.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Karen’s name to the ALS Society of Manitoba at alsmb.ca.
