Margaret Deally

Obituary of Margaret Rae Deally

Margaret was a lifelong Winnipegger, a first generation Canadian and the best baker her children or their friends have known.

She was pre-deceased by her husband David in 2007 whom she met at a high school Track & Field Event. She was competing for St. John’s Tech and he was running for Kelvin High School.

She worked at the Canadian Wheat Board and Swifts for many years, then became a full-time mother to her four children Liane (Alex, grandson Wolf), Carole (Bill), Kevin and Gregg. Despite preferring to be a city-dweller, she moved herself and her children to Grand Marais every summer so that they could enjoy the freedom of growing up at the beach and experience small town life. Following her creative passion, she was first an amateur songwriter, then a part-time author of Winnipeg stories and plays. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Manitoba in 1987 while working with her husband to support his entrepreneurial dream of running Doran Agency.

Mum was always ahead of trends. Her children remember her doing yoga in our upstairs hallway in the 1970s, brewing kefir in the kitchen window and driving her 1950 Pontiac up and down “hwy” 59 every summer. She loved reading, writing, movies, puzzles and British comedies and passed those loves on to her children and grandson.

Margaret’s children would like to thank the WRHA Palliative Care Team for the care that they provided in the last months of her life. There are not enough words to express our gratitude to her daily attendants who brought their compassionate care to her home. Our family wishes to thank pharmacist Myron Wong for his years of caring service.

It was Margaret’s wish that there be no funeral service.

‘So fill to me the parting glass

And drink a health whate’er befalls

Then gently rise and softly call

Good night and joy be to you all’

In lieu of flowers those who wish to make expressions of sympathy may consider a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of their choice.
